Li takes break after shock US Open loss

Chinese star Li Na will take a break from tennis otherwise the sport will "kill" her after she was sent crashing out of the US Open on Friday by teenage British giant-killer Laura Robson.

Ninth seed Li was beaten in the third round 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2 by 18-year-old Robson, the world number 89, who had also defeated triple US Open champion Kim Clijsters in the previous round.

"I can't go back on the practice court straightaway. I have to take some days off otherwise this will kill me," said 30-year-old Li.

The 2hr 25min defeat meant it's the first time since 2008 that Li has not reached at least the quarter-finals at any Slam during a season.

"I will have to talk to my team," she said. "Maybe they can see things clearer on the court and we can plan for the next step."

Robson becomes the first British woman to make the last 16 in New York since Jo Durie in 1991 and will face defending champion Samantha Stosur of Australia for a place in the quarter-finals.

She is also the first British woman in the last 16 of any Grand Slam since Sam Smith reached the Wimbledon fourth round in 1998. Smith was also the last British player to beat a woman inside the top 10 during that same Wimbledon run.

"She has a big serve but I made most of the mistakes that gave her more confidence and let her think that she could beat me," added Li.

"I gave her a lot of free points. I wasn't happy about the way I played."

Li believes that Robson can pose a tough challenge for Stosur.

"If she continues like this, then she can beat other players. It's up to her. It all depends on the opponent."

Robson, the youngest player in the world top 100 and the 2008 Wimbledon junior champion, showed few signs of nerves as she swept into the fourth round of a major for the first time.

Her win over Li was her first victory against a top-10 player and was her second successive victory over a Grand Slam title winner after sending four-time major champion Clijsters into retirement on Wednesday.

"It was really tough," said Robson, who said she will maintain her positive approach when she faces Stosur. "I have nothing to fear."

For Li, it was a bitter exit.

She had arrived in New York bubbling with confidence having won the Cincinnati title, her first trophy since Roland Garros in 2011, as well as reaching the final in Montreal.

She had also hired Carlos Rodriguez, the former coach of world number one Justine Henin, and the partnership seemed to be paying dividends until she ran into an inspired Robson.

In a topsy-turvy encounter on the Armstrong court, Robson and Li exchanged five breaks of serve in the opening set before the Briton clinched the crucial break in the 10th game.

Li broke to lead 1-0 in the second set, but left-hander Robson hit straight back for 1-1 before the Chinese star went on to take the tiebreak.

Li fought off three break points in the third game of the decider and two more in the fifth before gutsy Robson deservedly broke to lead 3-2.

Robson backed it up with a hold and another confident break to lead 5-2 and then wrapped up the tie when Li went long with a forehand.

Blind fish share common ancestor

A pair of eyeless, cave-dwelling fish species, separated millions of years ago, have turned up on either side of the Indian Ocean.

A study published in PLoS One showed that blind Madagascan and Australian cave fish share a common ancestor.

Their forebears probably lived in caves on the prehistoric southern super-continent Gondwanaland.

Then continental drift tore this family apart - transporting them to their current locations.

On his voyages of discovery, Darwin noted eyeless, colourless cave-dwelling creatures whose appearance was so bizarre and primitive he thought they were "wrecks of ancient life".

Prosanta Chakrabarty, assistant professor and curator at the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science, and his colleagues were particularly interested in two populations of goby fish living in Madagascar and north-western Australia.

Gobies form one of the largest families of fish, containing about 2,000 different species.

Though living in different parts of the world the cave fish shared important features: they were small - under 10 cm in length - eyeless, colourless and lived in freshwater, limestone caves.

How such similar fishes came to be living on different sides of the world was the question the researchers wanted to answer.

In the genes

One possibility was that the cave fishes had evolved independently, from terrestrial counterparts.

That they're 6,000 km apart in Madagascar and Australia is pretty remarkable?

End Quote Prosanta Chakrabarty Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science

Species adapt to environmental challenges and opportunities and - through a process of natural selection - only the fittest survive.

When separate species are exposed to the same selective pressures they often come up with the same solutions - a process known as convergent evolution.

For example, the elongated fingers of both the aye aye lemur of Madagascar and the striped opossum of Australia evolved so they could probe nooks and crannies for their favourite insect food.

In the case of the cave fishes, an alternative possibility was that the cave-fishes' odd features - or traits - were adaptations inherited from an ancestor common to both.

To determine which scenario was most likely, Dr Chakrabarty and his team used phylogenetic analysis - a study of the historical record held deep within their DNA sequences - to rebuild the goby family tree.

The researchers compared DNA sequences from more than 100 different goby species, including those from Australian and Madagascan cave fish that the researchers had collected.

Though separated by thousands of kilometres of ocean, the cave-dwelling fish of Madagascar and north-western Australia were genetically more similar to each other than to any other goby: they shared a common ancestor.

"That they're 6,000 km apart in Madagascar and Australia is pretty remarkable," observed Dr Chakrabarty.

Lost continents

But when and where did their ancestors live?

To answer this, the researchers used goby fossil records to calibrate their trees.

The newly chronicled evolutionary history of the fish showed that their shared ancestor was swimming in subterranean pools 45 - 110 million years ago, when the Earth looked very much different to how it looks today.

Australia and Madagascar formed part of a super-continent, called Gondwanaland, which also included what are now Antarctica, Africa, South America and India.

Around 180 million years ago, America and Africa broke away from this super-continent. Then, about 60 million years later in the early Cretaceous period, Australia-Antarctica started to split from India-Madagascar.

It was this separation that ultimately led to the descendants of the Gondwanaland cave fish living on opposite sides of the Indian Ocean.

Dr John Sparks, a co-author from the American Museum of Natural History explained: "The sister-group relationship between obligate cave fish from Madagascar and Australia is a remarkable example of Gondwanan vicariance - a split dating back to the Late Cretaceous."

But the study threw up some anomalies.

The authors believe that the common ancestor was dispersed throughout eastern Gondwanaland - which would include India - yet this country is devoid of similar gobies.

"Antarctica could have provided the connection [between Gondwanaland-locked Madagascar and Australia], or gobies could have been present in India but became extinct," suggests Dr Chakrabarty.

A more controversial possibility is that our knowledge of Gondwanaland might need updating - the kind of change to geology that very recently saw the presumed history of the isthmus of Panama adjusted by millions of years.

The study also threw up another surprise: one of the Australian caves explored by the team contained a fish that had developed pigment.

John Sparks, another curator at the museum, observed: "Our results, and the fact that we have recently discovered new cave fish species in both Madagascar and Australia belonging to these genera, in particular a fully pigmented form from Madagascar, are intriguing from another perspective - they show that caves are not evolutionary dead-ends."

CP Harbor House by MJ | Architecture

CP Harbor House is a rustic vacation home for two Toronto households on the rocky shores of Georgian Bay, designed by MJ | Architecture. The cottage is an assembly of four discreet enclosures linked by an expansive large wraparound porch and roof that links the two main houses and two guest cabins, and is the site of many impromptu shared meals. Both families required space for entertaining, one family needed a bedroom for the kids, the other family needed a home office and a music room. Tight zoning regulations required that they could only have one house on the site; the final scheme consisted of a massive shed, a post and beam structure of Douglas fir, 20 feet high at its apex, that shelter two separate double-storey but fully insulated structures.

That looks like the beginnings of a pretty ambitious international expansion plan and will certainly keep European rivals?iZettle?and SumUp on its toes, along with the UK's?mPowa,?given the Samwers' reputation for aggressive execution. Meanwhile, Jack Dorsey's Square is yet to launch this side of the pond. As?noted last month, Payleven reportedly raised??tens of millions? of euros in funding from New Enterprise Associates, Holtzbrinck Ventures and the Russian VC ru-net. Today, the company finally confirms that is indeed the case, describing the size of the round only as in the "double digit million euro" region.

Belgian pedophile accomplice gets early release

(AP) ? One of Belgium's most despised criminals, the former wife of a pedophile and child killer who let two of his victims starve to death, left prison for a convent late Tuesday after serving barely half her 30-year sentence.

Earlier in the day, the nation's highest court had approved a ruling that let Michelle Martin leave prison early despite her part in the mid-1990s kidnappings, rapes and killings by her then-husband, Marc Dutroux.

The case of Dutroux and his wife had horrified the nation and led to widespread improvements in Belgian police procedures after it emerged that police had bungled attempts to save some of the girls he had targeted.

Prison spokesman Laurent Sempot said Martin left prison in an unmarked vehicle late Tuesday.

Her eventual destination was the verdant village of Malonne, a 75-kilometer (45-mile) trip south of the capital, where she will live in a Clarisse convent and, in the words of her lawyer, seek atonement for her crimes.

Family members were outraged at Tuesday's court decision.

"There is only one word for this. This is simply absurd. But I will have to accept it," said Paul Marchal, whose daughter An was one of the victims of Dutroux. "Concerning Martin, my fight is over and done. I lost."

The lawyer for Jean-Denis Lejeune, whose 8-year-old daughter Julie was one of the girls who starved to death, said the families would work to change the law and make sure victims get a bigger say how long convicted criminals have to stay behind bars.

"We will first have to ask the politicians to change the law and, secondly, we will have to go to Strasbourg," where the European Court of Human Rights can still have an impact, said lawyer Georges-Henri Beauthier.

That process could take years, however.

Several policemen were stationed near the convent even before the verdict was announced and fluorescent graffiti near the convent protesting Martin's arrival was removed. At a religious statue near the gate, teddy bears sat next to a picture of the two eight-year-old girls who starved to death in Dutroux's dungeon in 1996.

A children's school is close by.

"My children are studying here," said Malonne resident Fabienne Huboaux. "We are afraid, afraid to see what is going to happen with them when they are going to go to class."

Martin has depicted herself as a passive culprit of the psychopath Dutroux. But she is still blamed for aiding her husband as he went on a depraved and murderous spree, and she is particularly loathed for letting the two girls starve while Dutroux was briefly imprisoned.

Dutroux, an unemployed electrician and convicted pedophile on parole at the time of the crimes, was arrested in 1996 and convicted eight years later of abducting, imprisoning and raping six girls between the summers of 1995 and 1996. He was also found guilty of murdering two of the six girls, who ranged in age from 8 to 19 years old.

The last two of Dutroux's kidnap victims were found alive in his basement a few days after his arrest.

Martin faced accusations of conspiracy in the kidnappings and imprisonment leading to the deaths of the two starved girls, who were held in a secret dungeon specially built in a cellar. When Dutroux was serving a four-month sentence for car theft, Martin said she was too scared to go into the cellar to feed them.

One year after they were kidnapped, the bodies of the two were found in the garden of a house that Dutroux owned.

Martin's lawyer, Thierry Moreau, insisted Tuesday that his 52-year-old client deserved a shot at a better life.

"There is something human remaining in Mrs. Martin, even though she acknowledges herself she is responsible for very serious acts," Moreau said. "She paid the price for it. She did it in respect of the law, and now there is this project where she wants to redeem herself and this will be another way to do her sentence."

The prospect of Martin's release had spawned demonstrations in the past few weeks, with demands to keep her in jail.

Uncovering Destiny through Astrology | Astrology

Entertainment | Astrology | * Written by David Daniel | Monday, 27 August 2012 02:07 | Word Count: 546

There are many stern believers of astrology but there are some who question the authenticity of Astrology. How many of us are truly sure about the accuracy of these predictions. Read on to find out more about this mystic occult science. Since ancient times astrologers have looked up to the skies and observed the positions of stars visible to the naked eye. Based on the positions of stars predictions and fortune forecasts were made. These were mostly fortune tellers who wandered and went about revealing the future. Some believe that the Vedic form is the oldest while many others believe that Chinese astrology is the oldest known form of astrology. Whether Vedic or Chinese, or for that matter western astrology, all astrologers have one thing in common and that is the art of predicting the future. The zodiac has been divided into 12 main signs and these signs stretch across the twelve months of a year.

Planets play a significant role in determining astrological predictions. Modern scientific inventions have helped astrologers make predictions well in advance. Yearly horoscopes are available for one to know what's in store for the coming year. Daily predictions and weekly predictions have become the order o f the day. One can read about their fortune on a daily basis. There are various mediums now available to users to know about their future. These mediums include TV shows, newspapers, and astro websites.

Birth details are significant for predicting accurately. Astrologers find it difficult to make predictions without the believer's accurate birth details. Birth details determine the sun sign of the believer. It also helps one ascertain what can possibly happen in the near future.

Unlike vedic astrology Chinese Astrology believes in associating the 12 sun signs with animals. Hence, these are also popularly called Chinese Animal Signs.? Personality traits are also associated with each sign. This helps the astrologer analyse the personality type of the believer.

One starts their love life or married life based on how well matched the charts are. A higher compatibility is an indication of better future prospects for the couple. In India, it is the Kundali that becomes the focal point before moving ahead with one's marriage plans. The marriage date is fixed after determining the muhurat. The kundalis are matched and the marriage is fixed.

Astrology is also very useful for those who plan to have a successful career. Career charts and lucky areas for work are determined based on the person's astro sign. This helps the believer in avoiding hurdles. Finances can also remain safe by taking precautionary measures. The user can make decisions based on how favourable the planets are.

Last but not the least; it's the Astrologer who plays a significant role in making astrological predictions. Astrologers are experts who have studied this mystic science in depth and are capable of making predictions. Astrologers further specialize in various branches of astrology to make highly accurate predictions and help believers. These astro branches may include ? Vedic astrology, Vaastu, Feng Shui, Crystal Healing, Palmistry, Rune Reading and Tarot Reading, etc.

NASA satellites are providing imagery and data on Typhoon Tembin southwest of Taiwan, and Typhoon Bolaven is it barrels northwest through the Yellow Sea. In a stunning image from NASA's Aqua satellite, Bolaven appears twice as large as Tembin.

NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies onboard the Terra satellite captured a remarkable image of Typhoon Tembin being dwarfed by giant Typhoon Bolaven at 0240 UTC on Aug. 27, 2012. The visible image shows that the island of Taiwan appears to be squeezed between the two typhoons, while the northeastern arm of Typhoon Tembin's clouds extend over the southern half of Taiwan and sweep over Luzon, the Philippines, where it is better known as Typhoon Igme. Bolaven appears to be twice as large as Typhoon Tembin and has a visible eye. Tembin's eye appears obscured by high clouds in satellite imagery.

Typhoon Bolaven recently passed over Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan as it moves northwestward into the Yellow Sea for a final landfall later this week in North Korea. Clouds from Bolaven's northeastern quadrant were blanketing Japan's island of Kyushu, which is the southwestern most island of the four main islands of Japan. The Yellow Sea is an arm of the North Pacific of the East China Sea, and it is situated between China and Korea.

On Aug. 26, NASA's Aqua satellite captured both storms in one infrared image. The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument captured an infrared image of Typhoon Tembin southwest of Taiwan and Typhoon Bolaven entering the Yellow Sea. AIRS has been providing infrared data about cloud temperatures, and sea surface temperatures around the storm. Both storms had large areas of very cold clout top temperatures that exceeded -63F/-52C) indicating strong uplift in each storm. At the time of the image, Bolaven was moving over the Ryukyu Islands. They are a chain of islands owned by Japan that stretch southwest from Kyushu, Japan to Taiwan.

On Aug. 27, infrared imagery from NASA's Aqua satellite showed that Bolaven maintained tightly-curved banding of thunderstorms that were wrapping into a well-defined and large low-level circulation center. The center of circulation is as large as 550 nautical miles in diameter!

Typhoon Bolaven in the Yellow Sea

On Aug. 27, 2012, Typhoon Bolaven was moving through the Yellow Sea. Its maximum sustained winds were down to 70 knots (80.5 mph/129.6 kmh). Bolaven was located approximately 380 nautical miles (437.3 miles/703.8 km) south-southwest of Seoul, South Korea, near 32.2 North and 125.0 East. The typhoon is moving to the north-northwestward at 16 knots (18.4 mph/29.6 kmh) and creating high seas of 43 feet (13.1 meters).

Bolaven is expected to weaken as it moves into cooler waters in the Yellow Sea. It is also expected to run into stronger wind shear. Bolaven is expected to make landfall in southwestern North Korea on Aug. 28.

Typhoon Tembin Ready to Move North

Typhoon Tembin completed its cyclonic loop south of Taiwan, and is now poised to move northeast and pass Taiwan on its journey behind Bolaven, into the Yellow Sea. On Aug. 27 at 1500 UTC (11 a.m. EDT), Tembin had maximum sustained winds near 65 knots (75 mph/120.4 kmh) making it a minimal typhoon. It was located about 240 nautical (276 miles/444.5 km) miles south-southwest of Taipei, Taiwan near 21.6 North and 120.4 East. It was moving to the east-northeast near 14 knots (16.1 mph/26 kmh). AIRS infrared data showed that Tembin showed an eye covered by central dense overcast, as correlated by the MODIS visible imagery.

Tembin is expected to move north past Taiwan over the next couple of days, and track through the Yellow Sea. Tembin's final resting place will be a landfall in southeastern China, near the North Korea border by the weekend.

Parliament could 'shut for 5 years'

The Houses of Parliament could close for up to five years while essential repairs are carried out, The Sunday Times said.

The broadsheet said several options were on the table while the plumbing and electrics are refurbished and the building is purged of asbestos, including leaving the Palace of Westminster for good.

"Officials are undertaking an initial study into options for the long-term upkeep of the palace," a spokesman for the House of Commons told the weekly.

"It is anticipated that the results of the initial study will be considered by the House of Commons commission and the House of Lords committee by the end of the year."

The Sunday Times said the Commons and the Lords could be evacuated for the first time since World War II, when the palace was repeatedly hit in Nazi air raids.

Options include leaving the palace, selling it and building a new parliament; a temporary replica chamber in the palace grounds; or, spreading the repair work out across decades of parliamentary breaks.

The interiors of the riverside Perpendicular Gothic palace, completed in 1870, have not been refurbished since the 1940s.

Parliament and the Treasury would have to approve the plans, the report said.

Governor McDonnell Announces Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund Now Open to Applicants
??$2 Million Economic Incentive Fund to Spur More Processing/Value-Added Projects ??

RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell announced today that guidelines for the newly created Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund have been finalized and localities are now able to apply for AFID grants that will enable them to support economic development and job creation efforts. With the release of these guidelines, Virginia, for the first time, has an economic development grant program designed specifically to support agriculture and forestry development projects.

"Agriculture and forestry are Virginia's largest industries, but we learned that too often economic development projects within these important business sectors didn't meet the necessary criteria for the Commonwealth's major incentive programs," said Governor McDonnell, who has made agriculture and forestry key components of his overall economic development and jobs creation agenda. "That's an omission that we've addressed as the AFID clearly recognizes the sometimes unique aspects of agriculture and forestry projects. We hope this program will encourage local governments to work closely with these important industries to create new jobs and increased economic opportunity in communities throughout the Commonwealth."

The creation of the AFID was part of Governor McDonnell's jobs creation and economic development agenda during the 2012 session of the General Assembly. The Governor signed the AFID bill into law on May 9 at Cave View Farm in Weyers Cave. Senator Bill Stanley (R - Glade Hill) and Delegate Steve Landes (R - Augusta) sponsored the AFID legislation, which is funded at $1 million in each year of the biennium. AFID funds are broken into two categories with $750,000 going to large grants to assist local efforts in expanding current or attracting new agriculture and forestry processing/value-added facilities using Virginia grown products and $250,000 dedicated to small grants to assist localities in improving local economic development efforts relating to agribusiness. The guidelines being released today are for applicants seeking an AFID grant for a processing or value-added facility. Guidelines for the assistance to localities will be released later this year.

"The AFID is a powerful new tool in Virginia's already impressive economic development and jobs creation portfolio of incentive options and will further enhance our 'best for business' reputation," said Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling. "The fund is particularly important to rural areas, regions of the state where the Governor and I pledged to focus significant attention and job creation efforts after we were elected in 2009. Agriculture and forestry typically are significant economic drivers in rural Virginia, so new investments in these industries will help to build on these region's existing strengths."

Under the processing/valued-added guidelines, program funds are now available to local governments and other political subdivisions as one to one matching grants of up to $250,000 to attract economic development prospects involving agriculture and forestry operations to locate or expand in Virginia. In order to qualify, a minimum of 30 percent of the agricultural or forestry products to which the facility is adding value must be grown or produced in the Commonwealth. Grant awards will be determined based on such factors as amount of private capital invested, projected state and local tax revenue generated as a result of capital investment and jobs created, anticipated amount of Virginia-grown product used by the project, projected impact on agricultural and forestal producers, a total return on investment analysis and an analysis of the impact on competing businesses in the area.

"The AFID's 'buy local' provisions will encourage agricultural and forestry operations receiving grant funds to explore all the ways they can source a significant portion of their inputs from within the Commonwealth," said Todd Haymore, Virginia's Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry. "In addition to allowing investing companies to utilize and enjoy the benefits of Virginia's high quality agricultural and forestry products, this provision expands existing markets or opens new ones for Virginia producers, helps preserve working farmland, and encourages investments in our rural communities."

Businesses interested in an AFID grant should first contact their local economic development professional or other appropriate representative of the political subdivision to discuss the proposed project. If the political subdivision is interested in applying for the grant and providing the required local match, they should contact Stephen Versen, AFID program contact at the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) at stephen.versen@vdacs.virginia.gov or 804.786.6911 to discuss the program and share initial project details. AFID Guidelines may be obtained on the VDACS website at http://www.vdacs.virginia.gov/agribusiness/afid.shtml. Applications will be taken on a rolling basis. The AFID program will be administered by the Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry with assistance from VDACS and Virginia Department of Forestry staff.

Agriculture and forestry are Virginia's largest industries, with a combined economic impact of $79 billion annually: $55 billion from agriculture and $24 billion from forestry. The industries also provide approximately 500,000 jobs in the Commonwealth according to the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.

BASEBALL: Angels keep their rally caps on to sweep Red Sox

MLB: They take the lead in the ninth inning, lose it, then score again in the 10th to defeat Red Sox.

By Howard Ulman BOSTON - Kendrys Morales led off The Angels' two-run 10th inning with a solo homer, and the Angels completed a three-game sweep of Boston by outlasting the Red Sox 14-13 on Thursday night.

The Red Sox wasted a 6-0 lead then rallied from deficits of 8-7 in the sixth and 12-11 in the ninth. But closer Alfredo Aceves struggled after Boston was one out away from victory in the ninth. Aceves (2-8) gave up five runs and six hits in one inning, and the Red Sox lost for the 11th time in 15 games.

Ernesto Frieri (2-0) got the win after giving up a tying solo homer in the ninth to Cody Ross, his 19th of the season, and an RBI single in the 10th to Dustin Pedroia, who drove in five runs.

Frieri was charged with a blown save, but secured the win when he struck out Adrian Gonzalez to end the 4-hour, 34-minute game.

With the score tied at 12, Morales jumped on an 0-1 pitch from Aceves for his 16th homer - just over the low right field fence. Erick Aybar followed with a single, knocking out Aceves. Vernon Wells hit an RBI double off Craig Breslow for the final run.

The Angels, who were swept in four games by Tampa Bay before coming to Boston, remained five games behind the Rays and closed to within 3 1-2 of Baltimore in the race for the AL's two wild-card spots.

The Red Sox took an 11-9 lead in the

eighth on RBI singles by Jacoby Ellsbury and Pedroia, but the Angels rallied in the ninth and regained the lead with Wells' eighth homer and two-out, run-scoring singles by Torii Hunter and Mark Trumbo.

Angels starter C.J. Wilson, 0-5 in his last 11 starts, struggled again.

The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Pedroia and an RBI single by Gonzalez.

They made it 6-0 in the second on run-scoring singles by Scott Podsednik and Ellsbury and Pedroia's 11th homer, a three-run shot.

But Franklin Morales couldn't hold the lead, giving up six of the Angels' eight third-inning runs. Los Angeles had six hits, three walks and an error in the inning. Chris Iannetta and Hunter had two hits each, and every member of the Angels lineup except Trumbo got on base in the inning.

Two runs scored on bases-loaded walks to Kendrys Morales and Wells. Seven consecutive batters reached base after two were out.

Wilson then settled down and retired eight straight batters before Pedroia reached on an error by third baseman Alberto Callaspo in the fifth and scored on a single by Ross.

Boston went ahead 9-8 with two runs in the sixth on Mike Aviles' 12th homer and consecutive doubles by Pedro Ciriaco and Ellsbury. But Los Angeles tied it in the seventh on Trout's RBI single.

Notes

The last Angels pitcher to go 11 starts without a win was Jim Abbott, whose streak reached 13 games from May 7 to Aug, 10, 1996. ... Angels first baseman Albert Pujols missed the game with tightness in his right calf. ... Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford underwent Tommy John surgery on Thursday to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. He is expected to be sidelined six to nine months. ... Jon Lester (7-10) pitches for the Red Sox on Friday against Bruce Chen (9-10) in the opener of a four-game series with the Kansas City Royals. ... The Angels return home for a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers with Zack Greinke (1-2) going for Los Angeles against Rick Porcello (9-8).

(AP Photo/Peter Dejong, File)

(AP) ? Lance Armstrong received plenty of support from fellow riders Friday.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency stripped Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles and banned him for life after the American decided not to fight charges that he used performance-enhancing drugs during his career.

One former rival, Filippo Simeoni, questioned why Armstrong didn't continue to contest the charges.

"It leaves me a bit perplexed, because someone like him, with all the fame and popularity and millions of dollars he has, should fight to the end if he's innocent," Simeoni told The Associated Press from his home in Sezze, Italy, during a lunch break from operating his coffee bar. "But I guess he realized it was a useless fight and the evidence USADA had was too great."

Simeoni welcomed the changes in cycling that have led to stricter doping rules since Armstrong won his seven titles from 1999-2005, but said more should have been done a long time ago.

"That entire decade was one big bluff," Simeoni said.

At the Spanish Vuelta, riders including former rival and teammate Alberto Contador joined ex-Armstrong coach Johan Bruyneel in offering support.

"I think he was a cyclist who always showed such strength, great intelligence and spectacular physical conditioning," said Contador, who edged Armstrong for his second Tour title in the first year of his comeback in 2009 and has battled his own doping charges. "We should wait and see what happens at the close before passing judgment."

Bruyneel called Armstrong a victim of an "unjust" legal case.

"I'm disappointed for Lance and for cycling in general that things have reached a stage where Lance feels that he has had enough and is no longer willing to participate in USADA's campaign against him," Bruyneel wrote on his personal website. "Lance has never withdrawn from a fair fight in his life, so his decision today underlines what an unjust process this has been."

The International Cycling Union said it was still awaiting USADA's explanation before deciding whether it would take any action against Armstrong. The organizers of the Tour de France said they would wait to see what both USADA and the UCI did before commenting.

"It's bad news for cycling. Again, it's back to the famous problem of the end of the 1990s and early 2000s. If Armstrong cheated, it's normal he should be sanctioned," two-time Tour champion Bernard Thevenet told French radio. "It's a very strong message to send cyclists and those around them who think about cheating."

If Armstrong is officially stripped of his titles, Jan Ullrich could be promoted to champion in three of those years. Ullrich was stripped of his third-place finish in the 2005 Tour and retired from racing two years later after being implicated in another doping scandal.

"If that actually becomes the case, I'll comment on that then," Ullrich said. "Until then, it's speculation."
